Louisville football: Next men up/The future

CB – Marqui Lowery (Fr.)

S – Josh Minkins (Fr.)

Louisville football will finally have solid depth in the back end of their defense and even with the group being primarily younger, they should all have the ability to impact games this season.

Two other pieces of the Louisville recruiting class from 2020 who will play in the secondary are Marqui Lowery and Josh Minkins, a local star from Ballard High School. Bother players were important gets for a defense that has struggled for years to keep offenses from going over the top.

Lowery will play at cornerback and could compete alongside Greedy Vance and Jamel Starks for early playing time in nickel and dime packages as well as on special teams. The 6’0 corner out of Charlotte has a fairly similar story to that of Jaire Alexander, as he was committed up until the very end to a smaller program (it just so happened to be App State) before flipping and signing with the Cards.

We saw how that worked out for Alexander, who saw the field nearly right away, and thanks to the staff’s ability to develop players, don’t be shocked to see Lowery become one of the next stars of the defense. Lowery talked about how Coach Brown recruited him and how he plans to bring a “dog” mentality to the backend with his high-motor and ability to provide versatility.

Minkins is a name that many fans become familar with last summer after a big-time season at Ballard saw his recruitment take off. He ultimately decided to follow in his dad’s footsteps and stay home to play for Louisville, and now he’ll bring game-changing size and athleticism to the safety position for the next three to four years.

There’s a chance Minkins could compete for playing time early, especially if he’s able to pack on some muscle, but it’s more likely he’ll play in spots this season and stay under the four game umbrella while redshirting. Minkins is a stud who I believe is going to have a Calvin Pryor, James Sample type impact on the defense long-term.
