Who will be the quarterback of the future for Louisville football?

Recruiting can be extremely fickle and demoralizing sometimes, and if you’ve been following the recruitment of top quarterback Shedeur Sanders, you know exactly what I’m talking about. For the Louisville football staff, things looked good when it came to landing the services of Primetime’s son up until the very end.

For weeks and weeks we’ve seen the 20-commits who make up the 2021 Louisville football recruiting class continue to play their role in recruiting Sanders, easily the most high-profile player left remaining on the board for the Cards, and things looked to be headed the right direction.

Even with programs like Alabama, LSU, Florida, Georgia, and other “elite” schools after Sanders, Louisville looked like the team to beat all along due to the relationship they had built with pro-style quarterback and in other areas that were important including scheme and coaching stability.

Unfortunately, things didn’t end up going the way many of us expected as we learned on Monday night that Sanders was shutting down his recruitment officially, committing to play at Florida Atlantic for new head coach Willie Taggart.

That’s about as shocking as it gets as you don’t often see top recruits turn down the allure of playing for a prominent power five (or even an elite power five) to play right away at a smaller mid-major school. The move doesn’t make a ton of sense considering Taggart being in his third stop in four years.

Now with Sanders joining the list of quarterbacks who Louisville’s targeted that have come off the board that includes Justin Lamson (Syracuse), Chayden Peery (Georgia Tech), Aaron McLaughlin (NC State), Lucas Coley (Arkansas), and a few others, the coaching staff is back to the drawing board. Thankfully, there are still plenty of talented players available for them who could end up being the next quarterback of the future.

Here are the four top options on the big board for the Louisville football program.
