Louisville basketball: 3 NBA teams who should sign Russ Smith
By Jacob Lane
Three NBA teams who should consider signing former Louisville basketball star Russ Smith.
The NBA is just a few weeks away from officially kicking off the remainder of the 2019-20 season after it was cancelled way back in March (doesn’t that feel like a century ago) following the first positive COVID-19 test in sports for Rudy Gobert. Eventually former Louisville basketball star Donovan Mitchell would be diagnosed with virus as would plenty other NBA players but that hasn’t stopped the league from putting a “bubble” environment together in Orlando to crown a champion.
With the season going on hiatus for nearly five months that means the schedule and calendar for the offseason will take a hit as will the potential for things like the NBA Combine, NBA free agency, the various official summer leagues, 2021 training camps. That leaves plenty of time for NBA free agents and free-agents to be to prepared.
One of those free agents that Louisville fans may have interest in, is Russ Smith one the greatest players in Louisville basketball history.
In a piece highlighting former Cards who didn’t get enough time in the league, I wrote about Smith and how his short stint and inability to get another chance while inferior players are signed is baffling.
Smith’s journey to get back to the NBA has taken him from the G League to Turkey to China to Puerto Rico and now the former Card is ready to jump back to the NBA.

Smith will attempt to catch a training camp invite this fall ahead of the 2020-21 season and if he were to do that there are a few teams who stand out as good potential fits.
Here are three teams who I believe could have interest in signing Smith this fall.
