Why Louisville football fans should hope for spring season.

There’s a lot to process heading into the upcoming Louisville football season.

The Cardinals return a ton of production heading into year two under head coach Scott Satterfield, plus Louisville will make some key additions at important positions.

However, preparation and speculation around the 2020 season is for naught if there isn’t a season at all. Given the current state of the coronavirus pandemic, having college sports at all during this calendar year is going to be a major undertaking.

Louisville AD Vince Tyra spoke on Wednesday about what it would take for the athletic department to feel comfortable proceeding with 2020 fall sports.

“Your plan is set for if things are in control. If things are in a stable environment. If they are not, I don’t foresee us kicking off,” Tyra said on Wednesday. “I think in my mind the plans we are putting in place and thinking about are pretty responsible and thoughtful, but those are under what I would deem more stable conditions. If they aren’t stable, then I think you are going to see delays.”

Delays, at this point, feel more likely than not. Locally, reports surfaced Wednesday that Jefferson County Public Schools will likely vote to remain on an at-home schedule. Local private schools are likely to follow suit, and it feels unlikely at that point that UofL could justify putting 20,000 students on campus.

It’s not all doom and gloom, however, for Louisville football fans if the season gets pushed back to the spring. Sure, it will be less than fun to go through another four months without college sports. But, on the other side of the COVID madness could be a sports season so packed that fans may never have to leave their couches on the weekends.

Outside of that, there may be a good chance that Louisville football would benefit from a spring schedule. Here’s three reasons why.
