Louisville football: Three reasons Cards could benefit from spring season
More time to develop a young defense
Let’s start with maybe the most obvious reason Louisville football could benefit. Time.
When assessing the weaknesses of the 2019 squad, it’s Louisville’s defense that really stands out- Specifically in regards to depth.
After seasons of neglect and constant coaching turnover under the previous regime, lack of balance on the recruiting trail and a number of unexpected transfers left the cupboard bare for Satterfield and company.
The new staff is working towards defensive depth by sliding guys to different positions, bringing in help from the JUCO ranks, and finding players that can contribute right away on the recruiting trail.
All of that bodes well for the sake of potential depth, but true helpful depth doesn’t happen without time and development.
Imagine a Louisville football roster with guys who had four-plus extra months of strength and conditioning training. Imagine young guys like Ja’Darien Boykin, Jamel Starks, and Henry Bryant along with JUCO transplant Yaya Diaby with extra time to learn, grow, and develop in the Louisville football system.
It is understood that other teams would have the same advantage with a season that is pushed back. But for Louisville’s defense, one could argue that the Cardinals are the power five squad that need it the most.
The Louisville offense figures to be one of the best in the country next season, but it’s that defensive balance that is crucial for the Cardinals if they want to take the next step.
