Recruiting the quarterback position has been crucial for the Louisville football staff, even in the grand scheme of a 2021 class that is very defense centric.
For Cardinals fans, there was a lot of disappointment and frustration when one-time Louisville lean and major high four-star recruit Sheduer Sanders. Ultimately, Sanders opted to surprise a lot of power five schools and commit to FAU.
Since the Louisville football coaching staff was going all-in on Sanders, there was a bit of a recalibration period where the staff had to focus on a new group of candidates.
The gem among the potential future Cardinals was Georgia native TJ Lewis.
After being considered the favorite to land his services, Lewis pulled the trigger and committed to Louisville on Saturday afternoon.

TJ Lewis continues series of duel threat specialists for Louisville football
TJ Lewis, a 6’3,” 180-pound prospect from Brunswick, Georgia becomes yet another dual-threat quarterback for the Cardinals. It has been apparent since the new Louisville coaching staff arrived on campus that the Cardinals are going to continue to look for players who have the ability to extend plays with their feet.
Though the Cardinals have secured commitments from two pro-style quarterbacks in Evan Conley in Tee Webb in the last two classes, both players are more than capable runners. The staff has enjoyed the luxury of having dual-threat Micale Cunningham behind center and secured a commit from a runner in Chubba Purdy before he flipped late to Florida State in the last class. Louisville was hard after Sanders for a long time before ultimately landing on Lewis.
Louisville has a pretty rich tradition of quarterbacks being true running threats from Stefan LeFors to Lamar Jackson to Cunningham and current back-up Puma Pass.
As a fan, there’s no problem having a traditional pocket passer like Brian Brohm, Browning Nagle, or Teddy Bridgewater. But having a QB who can get it done as a threat on the ground gives you wiggle room in regards to how much you can open up the playbook and how much pressure there is on recruiting high-level talent around you. When teams have a quarterback who is “the man” and can take over a game in multiple ways, it can hide a significant amount of flaws.
That’s what the Cardinals are getting in Lewis.
