No. 5 – at Georgia Tech

Louisville football will face off with Georgia Tech for just the second time since joining the ACC in 2014, with the first matchup coming back in 2018. Hopefully you were too drunk to remember what took place that night in Cardinal Stadium when Georgia Tech ran the ball 500 times and racked up close to 1,000 yards rushing. Alright so it wasn’t that bad, but it was a 66-31 loss and I game were I almost cost our website season tickets for hundreds of people (long story, do some research on Twitter).

Two years removed from that awful night, Scott Satterfield will look to lead the Cards into Atlanta for the first time in hopes of knocking off a Yellow Jackets team that could surprise some folks this season. Speaking of Satterfield, since he and new Georgia Tech head coach Geoff Collins came into the ACC at the same time from the non-power five level, they’ll be compared and linked for quite some time making this a game I’d love Louisville to win.

With Paul Johnson “retiring” the Georgia Tech program looks completely different, playing a fairly normal offense instead of the gimmicky wishbone offense. Collins has recruited extremely well and much like Satterfield has been able to get the most out of the players left behind by the previous staff.

Unfortunately the 3-9 record they finished with didn’t really indicate the growth the program experienced in their first season under Collins, but in year two they are expected to take a big leap.

Louisville should have a major advantage in this game, both offensively and defensively, in terms of overall talent and depth – which says a lot about how much work Collins has in front of him. While I won’t go as far as saying it’s an “automatic W” I do think this is a game that’s intriguing because of how many players were on the field that night in October of 2018.

You’d have to believe that veteran players like CJ Avery, Dorian Etheridge, and Jared Goldwire are going to want to mark off the Yellow Jackets on their “revenge list” and I fully expect to see one of the best defensive efforts of the season.

Offensively I really don’t worry about Louisville against any defense, but dealing with a unique system (they run a 4-2-5) and a bunch of returning players should provide a good challenge for Micale Cunningham and the gang.
