No. 22: Brock Travelstead – Kicker

Freshman

  • 2019 stats: 43/45 PAT, 3/8 FG, Longest – 40
  • 2019 BRL ranking: Not eligible (High school senior)

If you’ve been following football for any period of time, you’ve probably heard a coach talk about the importance of winning in all three phases; offense, defense, and special teams. While special teams often are the forgotten “phase” in the grand scheme of football, specialists like kickers, punters, and long-snappers can have more influence on a game, or even a season, then any of us really understand.

We saw that first-hand last season with senior kicker Blanton Creque, who was already headed towards the Louisville football record books, following several strong seasons as the team’s starter. Creque was as consistent as ever in 2019 kicking eight of his 11 field goal attempts through the uprights, including the game-winning kick in the closing seconds over Boston College,

After Creque went out from a season-ending injury, Louisville struggled in the kicking game for the remainder of the season.

That’s why whoever takes over placekicking duties in 2020 will have a major impact.

The player most likely to fill the role is true freshman Brock Travelstead.

A high school All-American, Travelstead has a strong leg and possesses excellent accuracy.

Travelstead was 28-for-35 on field goals and 128-for-130 on PAT’s during his career at North Paulding high school. In the Army All-American game, Travelstead drilled a 45-yard field goal with enough leg to make it from 55.

Louisville is likely to call on its kicker in a tough spot this season, and if we had to put money on it, Travelstead is the guy for the job.
