Louisville football: Who has best chance at winning Heisman Trophy?
By Jacob Lane
Micale Cunningham – Quarterback
I think it’s fair to say that we all know Louisville’s offense has the chance to be special in 2020 and it all starts with Cunningham. Entering his third season at UofL, and second with Scott Satterfield and Frank Ponce, Cunningham is set to be one of the best quarterbacks in all of ̶A̶C̶C̶ college football.
With Hawkins in the backfield, Atwell lined up in the slot, Dez Fitzpatrick and Justin Marshall outside, and Marshon Ford coming out of the h-back spot, the chances of producing some of the best stats in all of college football is possible. Assuming the line can keep him upright (and he can stay healthy) Cunningham should be able to outmatch his production from a year ago and do so in a very ascetically appealing way – something that plays a big part in the Heisman search.
Without Justin Fields, Tanner Morgan, Kedon Slovis, three players from the Big Ten and Pac 12 who were projected to be Heisman contenders, the race is even more wide open now and there’s a strong chance Cunningham at least gets to New York.
Cunningham will have to outdo his 2,061 passing yards, 25 touchdowns to just five interceptions, and the 482 yards and six rushing touchdowns – something I really believe he’s capable of doing if the offensive line doesn’t take a step back. It also may be worth noting that unless Louisville is at the top of the rankings, meaning they’ve won a lot of games, Cunningham nor his teammates will have much of a chance.
Winning is the priority, obviously, and as the quarterback if you can play a big part in doing that, the accolades and recognition seems to follow.
