Louisville football: Who has best chance at winning Heisman Trophy?

Tutu Atwell – Receiver

There’s no cornerback or safety who is going to be able to stay with Tutu Atwell – it’s just not possible. Even at 5’9, 165-pounds, Atwell was the most dynamic player on the field each and every time he stepped onto it, and it showed in his record setting 1,272 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Running a go route or some sort of double move seemed almost unfair at times last season as Atwell and Cunningham developed into one of the most lethal combinations. Atwell has improved on his route running this offseason and put on more weight to help sturdy up, all without losing speed.

Each and every play Atwell will capable of scoring and though I expect defenses to try and double team and slow him down at the line of scrimmage, I still don’t see anyone stopping him. Unfortunately for him, receivers aren’t usually on the receiving end of the Heisman Trophy. In fact, only two have won the award since 1935 – Notre Dame’s Tim Brown back in 1987 and Desmond Howard of Michigan in 1991.

The odds are stacked against him to compete for the Heisman, but his speed advantage makes him someone to watch for the award all season long. His most likely pathway to recognition is by way of All-ACC First Team honors and potentially winning the
