Recapping Louisville football’s loss to Georgia Tech position-by-position
Coaching
The coaching needs to be evaluated just as any other position on the field is. Satterfield and Bryan Brown are the lightly culprits to get the most heat.
Satterfield’s scheme has worked before and it still does work. I feel like a lot of plays are there to be made and simply have not been made. Particularly, Satterfield’s zone run scheme is very good and works quite well.
Passing wise, I would like to see more vertical routes and seam throws as opposed to corner routes and deep crossing routes that Malik Cunningham seems to struggle with.
As for Bryan Brown, I really do like his scheme. If anything, the scheme may be too complex for players if anything. Hayes obviously really struggles to understand it and there are a lot of defensive breakdowns that should not be happening.
He did a better job of bringing more than three or four rushers and the defensive line is active with twists and stunts. The back end is the issue.
The secondary struggles to stay latched on to receivers and it is difficult to determine if it is a talent or scheme issue. The defensive backs are not in positions to make plays on the ball many times. Again, it is difficult from a broadcast view to determine if it is scheme or personnel related.
The mental errors by Hayes are obvious, however. He simply is out of position off his own mental lapses and positioning. He consistently has put the defense in terrible spots to succeed.
This team has a long way to go. The personnel limitations are clear in the back end and at the defensive end position. I am not writing this team off to go winless the rest of the year. However, it seems expectations for the season were too high.
