Sam Williamson goes down with injury

Midway through the second half, Louisville’s star guard-forward Samuell Williamson went down with an apparent toe injury, according to the ESPN broadcast. Williamson was seen being helped to the locker room and limping.

It wasn’t clear exactly what happened to Williamson over the course of live play. But he did not return to the game. He was seen late in the game cheering on his teammates from the bench which was a good sign.

Louisville, despite the win, really struggled on both ends down the stretch and they certainly missed Williamson’s efforts out there in the final quarter of the game.

It was difficult to watch him go off injured after showing so much promise through two games. He looked very poised, efficient, and had an attacking mindset until he was forced out. Williamson is a key ingredient to this team having success. If he is out for a large period of time, that could spell real trouble for the Cards.

Williamson is one of (if not) the best shot creators on this team. He can create his own shot and his length is hard for other teams to match.

The freshmen could be asked to play bigger roles but it’s difficult to ask them to do more than they are already doing for this team. Williamson’s loss will send a shockwave on both ends of the floor as it’s hard to argue anybody but Williamson as the best overall talent on the roster.

Louisville is now down Williamson, Malik Williams, Josh Nickelberry, and Charles Minlend. We’re not even out of the opening week of the season yet.

If Williamson is out for an extended period of time, Louisville would be down to seven players who play regular minutes in the rotation and just eight total scholarship players available.

We will give you an update when we can on Williamson’s status moving forward.
