Louisville’s highest overall recruit, five-star Rueben Owens, is the number one overall running back prospect coming out of high school. The recruitment of the El Campo, Texas product starts with running backs coach De’Rail Sims. Coach Sims has made a huge impact on the Cardinals recruitment since his hiring in January 2021, landing former four-star recruit Trevion Cooley, former four-star transfer and current RB1 Tiyon Evans, and now Rueben Owens.

The University of Louisville football program needs to protect De’Rail Sims at all costs.

Owens has the talent and potential to make an immediate impact on the field for the Cardinals.  247 Sports seems to think so as well. They have recently updated their Top 100 high school senior athletes and Rueben has moved up to 20th overall.

Owens is the second highest rated recruit Louisville has had in the modern recruiting era behind another running back, former five-star hometown product Michael Bush. Bush just had his number 19 jersey honored earlier this year and led the Cardinals to three straight bowl appearances.

He certainly has the talent to carry the Cardinals just as Bush did, and pairing him in the backfield with four-star recruit Pierce Clarkson out of Bellflower, California could help lead the Louisville football program back to glory.

According to Brandon Huffman of 247 Sports, Owens is “superior in his redirection and explosion.” His top-tier talent is something that Cardinal Nation cannot wait to witness and Coach Sims cannot wait to enhance. He is capable of leaving an impact on this program very similar to the likes of a Michael Bush or a Lamar Jackson.
