In a recent interview with 60 Minutes, current Jackson State coach Deion Sanders told them he “would be a fool” if he did not entertain a vacancy at a Power 5 level. This is a very different take than what he uttered a year ago. Coach Sanders took the job at Jackson State, a Historically Black College and University, because he wanted to lead the way in changing the landscape of college football by showing recruits that it is acceptable to forsake material advantages for a truly unique and comfortable atmosphere.

Deion Sanders is arguably one of the most athletic players of all-time, playing two professional sports at the same time in football and baseball. He is a two-time Super Bowl (1994 & 1995) winner and also played in the World Series (1992). Sanders is the only player ever to play in a Super Bowl and a World Series.

There is a reason he was nicknamed “Prime Time” because whenever he was on the field or the diamond he was prime time television.

Sanders also is a very unique human as well as an athlete. Rather than jump into the Power 5 level coaching right away, he decided to lead the Jackson State Tigers because of his convictions to do so. In the aftermath of the riots and chaos of 2020, a lot of division was created while the black community grew stronger together.

Sanders has always been a man who created his own path and nothing has changed since he hung up his cleats. He took the Jackson State job in September 2020 and has completely changed the culture of JSU already. His son, Shedeur Sanders, is the starting quarterback for the Tigers and his talent is certainly FBS worthy.

Coach Prime has the respect and charisma to change a Power 5 school culture as well. He would certainly be a renowned name in the city of Louisville if Josh Heird were to offer him a job one day down the road.

Deion’s connection to Louisville is very interesting. He suited up for the Louisville River Bats, the Triple A affiliate for the Cincinnati Reds, in 2000 and 2001 for a total of 44 games. At which time, he scored the very first run in Louisville Slugger Field. Another career milestone to add to his laundry list of accomplishments.

In a Twitter post, he stated how much he enjoyed his time here in Louisville.

The Cardinals have not moved on yet from Scott Satterfield and if the team continues to string together wins, then the likelihood of a Satterfield exit at the end of this season is slim to none. However it is curious that Sanders has perked his ears up to the potential of coaching a Power 5 team and Louisville currently has a coach who is in muddy waters. So who knows what the future could hold? Maybe Coach Prime dons the headset for the Cardinals?
