Cardinals news: Brohm could snipe IN recruits, more

The Louisville Cardinals have brought in some top-tier talent as a part of their recruiting class. But perhaps what is even more impressive than that, is Jeff Brohm’s ability to bring talent to Louisville through the transfer portal. Since his installation on December 8, 2022, Brohm has brought in five four-star transfers and two-three stars.

The most recent transfer addition to the squad was Texas A&M’s Marquis Groves-Killebrew, who is an excellent addition to this defense now led by Ron English. English is known for his 4-2-5 defense, which means four down linemen, two inside linebackers, and five defensive backs.

With the additions of Groves-Killibrew, Myles Slusher, and Devin Neal Jr. through the portal, English is going to have some exceptional talent ready to lace up for his defense on day one. Four-star cornerback signee Aaron Williams, out of St. John Bosco High School, played last season with a torn ACL. Reports say he will enroll early at Louisville in the spring, followed by an immediate surgery with the hope of being ready for the fall.

For a noted offensive-minded coach, Brohm sure has done some serious damage scouting and recruiting talent on the defensive side of the ball. And with the recent announcement of four-star defensive lineman William “Woo” Spencer, out of New Albany High School, narrowing his list of schools down to four, Brohm could make another splash to add more talent to FlyVille23.

Spencer, a 6-foot-5 300-pound lineman, played his first three years of high school football at Male High School in Louisville, Kentucky before finishing out his diploma at New Albany High School. Back in July and September, 247 Sports experts predicted Spencer to join the Kentucky Wildcats next season. But now, that Brohm is at the helm for the Cardinals, he has a good chance of landing the Louisville native.

Currently, Woo is ranked as the fourth best recruit in the state of Indiana and could be an impact player for the Cardinals, if he chooses to return to his hometown. Joining him in the Indiana top-10 best prospects are current Purdue commits George Burhenn (#7 overall) and Kendrick Gilbert (#10 overall).

Burhenn was recently on-campus at Louisville during the biggest recruiting weekend in Louisville football history. And it is peculiar that he chose not to sign on National Signing Day, which was December 21, 2022. As of now, Louisville is without Marshon Ford, due to him declaring for the draft, and Isaac Martin and Josh Lifson are both seniors who will likely be gone. As well as, current Louisville tight-end commit Jamari Johnson has not signed his National Letter of Intent either. So, if Brohm can flip Burhenn, he could be a huge asset to the tight end room that is currently looking fairly thin.

Kendrick Gilbert, fellow Purdue commit, also has not signed his National Letter of Intent and originally committed to Purdue while Brohm was the Head Coach of the Boilermakers. So, if he does end up committing to Louisville, then the Cardinals would now have Micah Carter, Saadiq Clements, and Kendrick Gilbert coming to The Ville. All three of these guys are defensive lineman and all of them are 6-foot-5. Talk about a huge defensive line.
