2024 four-star Alabama commit Martavious Collins has decommitted from the Crimson Tide and reopened his commitment. Could the Cardinals land him?
Louisville landing a highly skilled athlete such as Martavious Collins does not seem that farfetched. They were able to secure the commitment of Jamari Johnson, even with a coaching change and now have the ability to pursue another top-tier athlete in Rome, Georgia product Martavious Collins.
Collins, a 6-foot-3, 240-pound tight end currently plays high school football for the Rome High School Wolves in his hometown of Rome, Georgia. Currently, he is a Top 200 player in the country, according to 247 Sports, and his talents speak for themselves as he earned a scholarship to arguably the best team in college football over the last decade, none other than the Nick Saban-led Alabama Crimson Tide.
However, he decided to decommit from the Crimson Tide, as of four days ago, and reopen his recruitment. Collins had been committed to Alabama since July 20, 2022. It’s unclear exactly why he decided to reopen his recruitment, but according to BamaCentral’s Hunter de Siver, it could be that Alabama’s tight end room is crowded. He writes:
"Collins is leaving a crowded tight end room, including Maryland transfer CJ Dippre, Robbie Ouzts and Amari Niblack."
Just a month prior to his commitment to take his talents to Tuscaloosa for his collegiate career, the University of Louisville offered him a scholarship on May 9, 2022. This scholarship offer solidified the visit he took to Louisville back in January 2022. Collins was on campus for the Chris Mack-era Cardinals when they took on their ACC foe Duke Blue Devils, in which Louisville suffered a defeat, 74-65.
Despite the loss, he told Cardinal Authority’s Michael McCammon that he greatly enjoyed his visit, saying,
"“It was awesome…The coaches was amazing. Also, the fans and the way the support they school and teammates.”"
His words were minimal, but he did indicate that he enjoyed his time here. While the coaching staff is completely different than it was when he came here, there is no doubt that Jeff Brohm could still sway him in the Cardinal direction. He has an inate ability to not only make student-athletes feel comfortable, but also those same student athletes’ families feel comfortable.
So, the potential for Martavious Collins to become a Cardinal is certainly on the table at the moment, although it’s also important to note that he has visited Auburn twice since his commitment to Alabama last summer. And one of those visits came after the Tigers hired their new Head Coach Hugh Freeze, who they plucked away from the rising Liberty Flames football program.
But, as we know with recruits, it’s not over until the ink is on the paper and that has not happened yet. So, at this point, for all we know, Louisville is still an option.
