Louisville baseball opened the weekend series with a 2-1 win against Bowling Green State University. The 1-3 Falcons gave the undefeated Cardinals a scare by tying the game in the sixth with an error, but the talented Louisville squad was able to regain control. Let’s recap the game below.

Louisville’s pitching staff was the bright spot of the day with holding Bowling Green to only one run. Ryan Hawks started the day with 7.1 innings pitched, eight strikeouts, and zero unearned runs.

The one run being an error from an overthrown ball from catcher Jack Payton in the sixth. Hawks limited hard contact on the ball, only allowing one double during his outing. Head Coach Dan McDonell handed the ball to Greg Farone in the eighth and was able to shut the door with 1.2 innings pitched and three strikeouts.

The Cardinals lineup did not have the same performance it did on Wednesday against Xavier, but was able put up enough runs to secure the win on Friday.

Jack Payton was able to start the game with a home run on a 1-2 count putting Louisville in front early. The Falcons starter, Gage Schenk, was able to regain control of the game until the 7th inning when Payton continued his big day at the plate with a double to begin the inning. Eddie King Jr. was able to follow that up with a clutch go ahead RBI.

Louisville ‘s pitching staff were the key performers in the matchup with their ability to shutdown the Falcons lineup. The Cardinals’ three errors gave Bowling Green some chances that they almost capitalized on to take the first game of the series. But, the #5 team in the nation was able to temper the game speed late, and Greg Farone allowed no late heroics from the Falcons.
