Louisville basketball drawing interest from elite Class of 2023 3-star guard
Now that the Louisville basketball season is officially complete after a 80-62 loss to Boston College in the first round of the ACC Tournament, all focus for the coaching staff can be turned to recruiting and the transfer portal. Recently, a name has emerged, that may be overlooked by some but underrated by many, with a few links to Louisville basketball. He is currently a student-athlete at John Marshall High School in Richmond, Virginia and his name is Jason Rivera-Torres.
For the Justices this season, he is averaging 15.1 points per game, 7.9 rebound per game, and 3.5 steals per game. In large part due to his contributions, John Marshall is 27-0 this season with their next game set for this Saturday against the Radford Bobcats.
With his senior season in high school coming to a close, the 6-foot-7 guard still has yet to commit to a college or university. But, that certainly is not due to a lack of offers from schools around the country. On February 21, 2023, Jason Rivera-Torres released a graphic including all of the schools he currently holds offers from or has interest from, and the University of Louisville was included in that graphic.
Normally, when a Cardinal appears on a graphic in the Twitter-sphere, Cardinal Nation flies to the comment section attempting to persuade said-recruit to Louisville. But, that did not appear to be the case in this instance. However, the ties to Louisville go further than just this graphic.
On March 5, 2023, the man behind the Louisville Recruiting Report YouTube page, Marcus Brooks tweeted out that the underrated guard is being recruited by Head Coach Kenny Payne. Two days later, Brooks posted a picture from current 2024 Louisville commit TJ Robinson‘s Instagram story depicting that Jason Rivera-Torres was donning a piece of Robinson’s apparel line.
If Robinson and Rivera-Torres already are building chemistry, then that is a great sign for Louisville basketball. After a historically low season, the Cardinals look to put their record in the rear view as they can now explore the recruiting waters IARP-free. And a great starting piece for next year’s roster would be Jason Rivera-Torres.
The Louisville basketball recruiting rumors have been storming as of late with Louisville reportedly in on elite rim-protector Dennis Evans, NBA Academy Africa star Churchill Abass, potentially 2024 five-star forward Carter Bryant, 2024 five-star guard Trentyn Flowers, and now Jason Rivera-Torres. If Louisville were to land all of these players, the talk around a 4-28 season would quickly disintegrate.
