The University of Louisville is considered to be one of the top men’s college basketball programs of all time. As of 2023, the Cards have won three National Championships and reached 10 Final Fours in 43 NCAA Tournament appearances. The Louisville men’s basketball program has also sent over 60 players to the NBA, including six NBA All-Stars with 13 total All-Star selections.

UofL is better known historically for its dominant big men such as Wes Unseld, Pervis Ellison, and Charlie Tyra. However, the Cards have had some incredibly talented guards play for the program over the years. From Darrell Griffith to Donovan Mitchell, there has never been any shortage of skill and leadership in the Louisville backcourt.

In this article, we will count down the 10 greatest point guards to ever wear a Louisville Cardinals jersey.

Who are the top ten point guards in Louisville basketball history?

10. Jim Morgan (1953-1957)

The starting point guard of the 1956 NIT Championship team, Jim Morgan was one of the early stars in the Louisville men’s basketball program. He averaged 15.8 points and 4.3 rebounds per game as an upperclassman at UofL while leading his team to a combined record of 47-8 over the 1955-1956 and 1956-1957 seasons.

Jim Morgan was an elite passer and, to this day, remains one of the top distributors in program history. He managed to score a total of 1,105 points during his college career and was inducted into the University of Louisville Athletics Hall of Fame in 1981.

9. Phil Bond (1972-1977)

A Kentucky native and graduate of Louisville’s duPont Manual High School, Phil Bond ranks fourth all-time in UofL men’s basketball history with 528 career assists.

He is best remembered for his remarkable passing ability and natural leadership skills, but he was also a very capable scorer, averaging 9.8 points per game and shooting above 48.0% from the field in each of his final three seasons with the Cardinals.

The starting point guard for Head Coach Denny Crum’s second Final Four team, Phil Bond was named Most Valuable Player of the 1975 Midwest Regional and was an All-American in 1976.
