Jaylon Tyson – Forward – 6’6″ – Texas Tech

By my count, this is just the third time the staff has reached out to a non-guard in the transfer portal (the first being Myles Stute who transferred from Vanderbilt to South Carolina).

Jaylon Tyson is a former five-star wing, who began his college career at Texas. The Plano native saw just eight games of action in his freshman year under Chris Beard, so Tyson elected to transfer last spring to Texas Tech.

Trading out Burnt Orange for Raider Red turned out to be a great decision for Tyson, as he played in every game for the Red Raiders last season, and averaged nearly 11 PPG, 6 RPG on 48% shooting (40% from behind the line).

He even hit some HUGE shots for the Raiders last season.

But the hiring of a new coach, Grant McCasland, has Tyson back in the transfer portal for the second straight year. Tyson entered his name into the portal two weeks ago, but it wasn’t until early this week that Louisville was announced as a school interested in Tyson.

As you can see in the tweet, Tyson has already visited the University of California, spoken with Auburn, and he’s visiting Kansas this weekend, so Louisville seems to be behind in this recruiting battle.

Jaylon Tyson is a top-50 ranked player in the portal, according to On3, so it’s no surprise a top-tier school like Kansas is interested. But, right now, it looks like Cal is the leader for his services. 247Sports has two Crystal Ball projections for him to transfer there, and they recently landed his teammate, Fardaws Aimaq.

I’m not sure how likely it is that Louisville can land Tyson’s services, but it certainly would be nice. He is efficient, shoots well from three, and he’s a solid defender (1.4 SPG). I think the addition of a proven three-and-d wing would be great. This team does have plenty of incoming talent at the wing spot, but it’s mainly coming from incoming freshmen. Tyson will be an incredible addition to whatever team lands him, but I wouldn’t hold out too much hope on him becoming a Card.
