Andrew Taylor – Guard – 6’3 – Marshall University

It’s been a while, but we finally have a new player the staff has reached out to, and this new name has roots right here in the Bluegrass.

Andrew Taylor played his high school ball at Corbin High School in Corbin, Kentucky. And he’s spent the last four seasons in West Virginia playing point guard for the Marshall Thundering Herd.

Last season was a career year for Taylor, who was named to the 2022-2023 All-Sun Belt First Team. Taylor’s 2022-2023 stat line rivals some of the best in the NCAA.

As you can see above, his scoring was elite last season, and he was excellent at distributing, as well. He also shot better than 36% from three (on more than seven attempts per game).

And it’s not like he put up these numbers on a bad team. Marshall went 24-8 last year. He did turn the ball over three times a game, and that is a concern, but Louisville had only El Ellis with a positive Assist/TO ratio last season, and Ellis’s was slightly worse.

  • El Ellis – 4.4 Assists / 3.8 TOs – 1.16 Assist/TO ratio
  • Andrew Taylor – 4.7 Assists / 3.0 TOs – 1.60 Assist/TO ratio

I’d prefer my point guard not to turn the ball over three times a game, but I imagine that number is a little inflated due to Taylor having the ball in his hands so much. Unfortunately, Marshall’s men’s basketball Twitter account doesn’t post highlights of their games often, so I don’t have much to show, in regards to his play. But there is this nice, composed late in-game three he hit in his junior season.

I think Taylor would be a great addition to this team. He fits everything we need. He’s another ball handler and playmaker, which this team badly needs, and he’s a good three-point shooter.

Additionally, he’s got four years of college basketball experience, and experience is something this team needs. Looking at the current roster, this team has eight full years of high-level college basketball experience.

I think Taylor would fit perfectly on this roster. This would be a nice starting lineup:

  • PG – Andrew Taylor
  • SG – Skyy Clark
  • SF – Mike James
  • PF – Tre White
  • C – JJ Traynor

Obviously, we could go a bunch of different ways with the forwards and bigs, but I think Taylor would give us a really solid starting backcourt. He has a long list of colleges courting him, so it might be tough to get him, but I think he’d be an incredible addition to next year’s squad.
