Coming out of high school, Kennedy Cambridge was a proven winner. Leading her team to three state titles in four years, averaged over 14 points in her senior season, and earned a four-star prospect ranking. With that kind of resume, it was no secret why she was a highly coveted prospect in the Class of 2022. ESPN ranked her as the No. 52 overall player in the class and the No. 36 overall guard.
Status as a top-55 player and winning multiple state championships are some of the reasons why Kentucky Head Coach Kyra Elzy recruited her. Not to mention the distance from her home in Tennessee wasn’t too far either. Her older sister, Jordyn Cambridge, plays basketball at Vanderbilt in Nashville, Tennessee as well.
Kennedy Cambridge certainly wasn’t far from her family or older sister, but after just one season in Lexington, she is ready to move on. She officially entered the transfer portal in March of this year and has already been on multiple visits to other programs.
Her first visit made public was to Oregon, but her second visit is way more exciting. She was on campus at the University of Louisville today, per her Twitter account.
Leaving Kentucky via the transfer portal and taking a visit to their rival school speaks to what Head Women’s Basketball Coach Jeff Walz is building. After suffering the loss of Hailey van Lith, the trajectory of the program was in question. But, it did not last long as Jeff Walz channeled his inner Jeff Brohm and ferociously attacked the transfer portal.
In what seemed like a whirlwind, Jeff Walz and staff added Nina Rickards, Kiki Jefferson, Jayda Curry, Hennie van Schaik, and Sydney Taylor out of the transfer portal. Not to mention the midseason addition of Georgia Tech’s Eylia Love. And most recently the high school addition of 6-foot-6 Eseosa Imafidon.
Now, he is in on another big name in the transfer portal, Kennedy Cambridge, from the school down south. While in Lexington, she played in 19 games and made only one start. She averaged 2.7 points per game and 2.3 rebounds per game in just 14.4 minutes per game. Cambridge tried to make the most of her playing time but would have benefited greatly from more time on the floor.
If she comes here, she can learn from extremely talented guards and grow into an even more refined player. But, a major step towards that happening is a visit on campus, which is official. Jeff Walz continues his off-season magic.
