No. 2 Louisville’s run game and defense is one of the best in the country

Louisville not only dominated Virginia Tech in the run game and defense, but they made them look like one of the worst teams in the FBS. The Cardinals held the Hokies to just 140 total yards, with 72 passing and only 68 rushing. The Virginia Tech QB, Kyron Drones, was known for his explosive play making and running ability, and Louisville simply just shut him down. He threw 12/21 for 69 yards and an interception. Louisville was able to contain him very well and was never able to get anything going from either side of the ball.

The explosive running back Tuten was also shut down early, and the fact that the Cardinals got up early was a big part in that. His longest run of the day was only 16 yards, and the front 7 absolutely shut down the star running back.

The Louisville running game was also spectacular yesterday. The Cardinals had 231 yards rushing and everybody got a shot to run the ball. Jawhar Jordan was questionable coming into the game, but still had 14 carries for 57 yards on the day. Maurice Turner also got some carries on the day but couldn’t result in anything, as he only had 13 yards on 7 carries.

The surprise of the day was Isaac Gurrendo’s 146 yard game, where he scored 3 TDs on just 11 carries. Virginia Tech is a good run defense and the fact that Louisville was able to run so effectively is very impressive. It also shows how the Cardinals can run the ball well with players that aren’t Jawhar Jordan.
