Game Prediction and Key Players:
Louisville will take on Chattanooga tonight at the KFC Yum! Center, and the Cardinals will look to advance to 2-0 for the first time in the Kenny Payne era. If Payne wants to keep his job he needs to win these first 3 games. He barely escaped UMBC, and Chattanooga wll present a little bit more of a challenge to the Cardinals.
Chattanooga currently ranks at 205th in the KenPom, and UMBC ranked last week in the low 300s. It will be a little bit more of a tougher challenge for Louisville, and they cannot lose to this team if they want any shot at making the tournament or Payne wants to keep his job next season. The Cardinals are favored going into this game, but not by much. The line started at -4.5 and has already dropped down a point to -3.5 as of writing this.
Key players for Louisville:
Mike James:
Mike James led the team in scoring last week and had a double double, with 25 points and ten rebounds. It will be interesting if he continues playing this well, and if he will continue to lead Louisville on the offensive side of the ball specifically. He is a big player to watch in tonight’s game.
Brandon Huntley-Hatfield:
Hatfield was not regarded well this offseason and looked very uninspired in the first 2 exhibition games so far this season. However, it the home opener he played very well. Hatfield only scored 5 points, but was a menace on the boards, grabbing 5 offensive rebounds and 10 boards overall. It will be interesting to see how that good performance carries over to tonight’s game.
Skyy Clark:
Clark led the offense most of the night on mondays game and he scored some late buckets to give Louisville the lead in a decent performance. Keep on eye out to see how Clark runs the offense tonight, especially when Ty-Laur Johnson is out on the court with him.
Louisville vs. Chattanooga Prediction:
It is so early in the season that it is hard to gauge either team so far this year, but the Cardinals should be looking to win this one. Chattanooga should present a better challenge to Louisville, and they cannot falter to another inferior opponent.
The Cardinal offense looked on point in Monday’s game. If they made a couple more 3s and made free throws, they may have blown out UMBC by a decent amount.
I don’t trust Kenny Payne enough to blow out a team like this, but I do like the Cards chance more than I like Chattanooga’s. The offense should lead the way for Payne’s team tonight, the defense just has to hold up down the stretch.
