Louisville will face Coppin St. in a critical game for Kenny Payne and the Cardinals

The Louisville Cardinals will play their 3rd game of the season tonight, and it may be the most important game of the season. The Cardinals come into the game at 1-1 and if they want any confidence going into the Empire Classic against Texas this Sunday then they need to win this game. While Louisville is 183rd in the KenPom, Coppin State is a whopping 360th. They are a bad basketball team, and if Kenny Payne’s team can’t come out with a win, then he may not be looking at a job come this time next year.

It is critical for Louisville and Kenny Payne to win this game, only time will tell how good (or bad) this season can be. We will know a lot more after the 7:00 PM tip off tonight.

Louisville v Coppin State betting odds, spread, and total:

Louisville won’t be favored by a lot in any of the games they will play this season, but Coppin State is a massive exception. The Cardinals will be a -17.5 point favorite over Coppin State, and it will probably be the biggest line in favor of the Cardinals all season. The Cardinals are also -3000 on the money line, while Coppin State is +1300 on the money line. The over/under for the game also comes in at 147.5.

Key Players for Louisville:

Mike James:

Mike James has been the most consistent player for the Cardinals through 2 games, and if he can avoid foul trouble he will be able to help Louisville win this game by quite a bit. James got into foul trouble in the game against Chattanooga, and it resulted in him only playing in 22 minutes of that game. James has been the Cardinal’s best player through 2 games, and hopefully his rebounding and shooting ability will carry over to the game tonight against Coppin State.

Brandon Huntley-Hatfield:

Brandon Huntley-Hatfield has certainly had an interesting start to the 2023 season. Hatfield looked underwhelming in the exhibition games before the season started, but has looked like a decent player for Louisville to start the year. He is often criticized for not hustling and being lackluster on the boards, but so far this season that is not true. Hatfield has looked like a player that is giving it his all on the court. Although a lot of his shots aren’t falling, he has been a monster on the boards. He had 14 rebounds in the loss to Chattanooga, along with 3 steals and a block. If Hatfield can start getting his shots to fall he may end up being one of the more productive players on the roster.

Skyy Clark:

Skyy Clark is the true starting point guard of this team, but against Chattanooga he had a less than stellar game. Clark scored a team high 17 points, but came with shooting 5/17 from the field and going 0/4 from three point range. Clark also had 4 assists, but that came with 4 turnovers as well. It seems like whenever Clark does good thing on the court it is followed by bad thing, so it is hard to gauge how good of player he is. Hopefully tonight against Coppin State he can put together a complete game.

Louisville v Coppin State final score prediction:

Louisville lost a lot of their good will following the loss to Chattanooga, however, I firmly believe they will win this game against Coppin State. Coppin State is one of the worst teams in all of college basketball, and if the cardinals don’t beat them by at least double digits it will be very disappointing. I’m looking for the offense to shine, and for the defense to play at least good enough against this bad basketball team.

Final Prediction:

Louisville 82, Coppin State 70
