1. The Run Game

Louisville’s identity under Brohm is built around the running attack, and the Browns wasted no time proving why in the opener. Isaac Brown and Keyjaun Brown both found the end zone, showcasing power, vision, and speed that few defenses will be able to contain. Behind them, depth backs like Braxton Jennings and Duke Watson chipped in, giving Louisville a stable of runners who can each contribute. By averaging nearly eight yards per carry, the Cardinals opened everything up for Moss in the passing game and kept EKU off balance.

But Louisville won’t be the only team relying on the ground. James Madison ranked 28th nationally last year with 191.5 rushing yards per game and brings back a dangerous duo of their own. George Pettaway, who ran for nearly 1,000 yards in 2024, picked up right where he left off with 99 yards in the opener. Wayne Knight added 89 yards on just seven carries, including a 59-yard touchdown run. JMU’s ability to break off explosive runs means Louisville’s defense must stay disciplined at the line of scrimmage.

Defensively, both teams know how to bottle up the run. James Madison allowed just 115 yards per game last season, ranking 25th in the nation, while Louisville wasn’t far behind at 132 yards per game, good for 40th. With both defenses stout, the matchup may come down to which offense finds consistency in the second half. If the Browns can grind down the Dukes’ front seven, Louisville should be able to pull away. If not, JMU’s backs could keep the upset dream alive deep into the night.
