Louisville basketball was bounced in the second round of the NCAA Tournament after the Cardinals lost to Michigan State Saturday afternoon. Entering the 2025-26 season, the Cards' expectations were much higher than a round of 32 exit, but on the positive side, Pat Kelsey earned his first NCAA Tournament win of his career, and Louisville snapped its eight-year drought without an NCAA Tournament win.

Now, the Cardinals will quickly turn to next season and try to end their Sweet Sixteen drought, as Louisville hasn’t reached the second week of the tournament since 2015. Pat Kelsey made it clear he understands the standards and expectations at the University of Louisville, and he will not fight and “earn his key” until the confetti is red, black, and white.

So, after Louisville lost to Michigan State, here are five reasons why Louisville will be in the Sweet Sixteen next year.

3. Returning players

It will be interesting to see who returns and who enters the Transfer Portal, but on paper, the Cardinals have some key players returning and looking to make a jump. Louisville will lose four of its five starters, but that gives London Johnson, Adrian Wooley, Khani Rooths, and Sananda Fru to make the jump to the starting lineup.

Wooley, Rooths, and Fru were a big part of the Cardinals' roster last season, and it is good to have a good foundation for the next season. If these four can return and get another year in the system, build their confidence, then Louisville’s roster is already in a good position.

With Louisville already having a point guard, shooting guard, power forward and center, Kelsey could potentially go all-in on an elite small forward and attack his bench to build depth.

2. Pat Kelsey

The Cardinals' head coach is a winner. He has to find ways to win the big games and against ranked teams, but he has this program trending up and back in the NCAA Tournament yearly. In his first season, he brought them back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2019, and now this year, he took them to the second round for the first time since 2017.

Kelsey is a player's coach, and someone these elite players love to play for. He has full trust and confidence in his players, and his players play hard for him. Kelsey has made six NCAA Tournaments and has won over 70 percent of his games. With Louisville continuing to take steps forward, Kelsey will be a big reason why the Cardinals advance to the Sweet Sixteen.

1. Transfer Portal

Last year, Louisville went all-in on the Transfer Portal, spending around $10 million to build its roster. There is no report on how much the Cardinals will have to spend on Kelsey and the offseason, but if it is anything similar, Louisville will be ready to build another elite roster.

If Louisville gets Wooley to return, Kelsey has to find a knockdown 3-point shooter, but he has to attack the frontcourt. Louisville has a glaring hole at the small forward position right now and needs to add some depth. The Transfer Portal will be a big factor for Louisville next season. With zero 2026 commitments, the Cardinals have to go all-in for the second straight season.

With Louisville's key players potentially returning, the Cardinals could go get some elite frontcourt players and then build around the roster Kelsey already has.
