2. Limiting runs
One of Louisville’s biggest issues in its losses this season was the inability to stop opposing teams from going on extended scoring runs. When the Cards struggled to shoot the ball at their normal level, Arkansas and Tennessee were able to pull away by dominating key stretches of the game. While Louisville’s tendency to live and die by the three doesn’t appear to be changing anytime soon, they still needed to find a way to prevent opponents from fully taking control so they could stay within striking distance.
Against Cal, Louisville did exactly that. While California is not Arkansas or Tennessee, the Golden Bears entered the game at 12–1 with an impressive win over UCLA earlier this season. It was important for Louisville to start fast and stay in control if they wanted to dictate the style of play.
The Cardinals led for nearly the entire game and were able to weather the storm after building a large early lead. Cal made a push late in the first half, trimming a 21-point deficit down to 14 by halftime. However, Louisville used the break to completely halt that momentum and never allowed the game to get any closer in the second half.
If Louisville wants to win big games against quality opponents, this type of run-stopping ability will be essential.
