Louisville basketball’s 2026 recruiting class didn’t go as many had hoped. The Cardinals still have yet to earn a commitment from a 2026 recruit, and with the Transfer Portal less than two weeks away, it seems like Pat Kelsey will have to go get his elite ball handler from the portal. Or will he?
5 key players who will play for Pat Kelsey and Louisville basketball next season
There have been a lot of rumors recently that this could be Bill Self’s final season and that the Hall of Fame coach could retire. Self has been the coach for Kansas for over 20 seasons, taking over in 2003, and has a dominant 648-167 record with the Jayhawks. He has made the NCAA Tournament every year, is a two-time AP Coach of the Year, and won the NCAA Title twice in 2008 and 2022.
He is one of the best recruiters and coaches in recent college basketball history, and if he were to retire, Kansas would likely lose many recruits and current players. And one of the Jayhawks' current commitments is a Kentucky native and a former Louisville target, Taylen Kinney.
Bill Self's retirement rumors may give Pat Kelsey another chance at Taylen Kinney
If Self does end up retiring, that would mean Kinney would be allowed to decommit from Kansas, as a change in head coach gives commitments a chance to test the waters again. And so, if Self does retire, there could be a strong chance that Kinney opens up his recruitment again, and with Louisville once the dominant favorite before Self landed the 5-star point guard, the Cards could have a dream scenario in the making.
Louisville fans should be all-in on the Self drama for this reason. The Cardinals were heavily involved in Kinney’s recruiting process, as many predicted Louisville to land the 5-star point guard over the summer, but after a late visit to Kansas before his commitment announcement, Kansas ripped him away and landed the Kentucky native.
Kinney ended up committing to Self and Kansas over Louisville, Kentucky, Arkansas, and Oregon. The Cardinals earned multiple visits, and Kelsey took a couple out to the 5-star point guard, but the 5-star decided to head to Kansas. However, now it feels like with Self possibly retiring, Kelsey could have a chance at redemption.
Kinney ranks as high as No. 11 overall and No. 2 among point guards in the 2026 class. If Self decides it is time to retire, Louisville and Kelsey should be ready to attack and contact Kinney immediately. The Cardinals will likely lose Mikel Brown Jr. to the 2026 NBA Draft, and with all the rumors surrounding Self and his possible retirement, Louisville fans should keep a close eye on the Kansas head coach and possibly Kinney.
For now, Louisville will play the waiting game and will see what Self decides.
