ESPN reveals Louisville basketball has the pieces for a special season under Pat Kelsey

Pat Kelsey and Louisville basketball are coming off a bit of a letdown season, as the Cards lost in the second round of the NCAA Tournament despite Final Four expectations heading into the season. Louisville was hit hard by the injury bug, missing Mikel Brown Jr., their 5-star freshman and one of the top point guards in the nation last season.

Louisville's lineup even without Milan Momcilovic should still have fans dreaming big

Kelsey made it clear he understands the expectations and standards at the University of Louisville, and the Cards' head coach put in extra work this offseason. He completely rebuilt his roster, and Louisville is right back in the conversation of being not just an ACC Title contender but a Final Four and National Title contender.

ESPN recently broke down the best portal classes from this offseason, and college insider Myron Medcalf appears to be all-in on Louisville, as he made it clear the Cardinals have a high ceiling.

ESPN sees enormous upside in Louisville's star-studded transfer class

Louisville added nine players this offseason, six from the Transfer Portal and three from the 2026 recruiting class. Kelsey landed two 5-stars in Flory Bidunga and Obinna Ekezie Jr., and multiple 4-star transfers, including former 5-star point guard Jackson Shelstad and former 5-star forward Karter Knox.

Now, as the offseason workouts amp up, ESPN's college basketball insider puts Louisville's championship ceiling into focus.

"Louisville's class is stacked with the most promising talent in the portal pool," Medcalf stated. "The ceiling for this group is high. To earn this title, Pat Kelsey's Cardinals will need Shelstad to bounce back from injury and Folgueiras to replicate his postseason performance across an entire season. But the building blocks are all there."

Medcalf praises Louisville's addition and makes it clear the ceiling is high. For the Cards to win the title and make a run in March and April, he emphasized that Shelstad has to play as he did before his injury, when he was averaging career highs in nearly every stat. He also made it clear Alvaro Folgueiras is going to be a big X-factor for the Cards' title hunt and that the 4-star transfer has to play as he did in the NCAA Tournament, when he scored 14 points in the first and second rounds and 16 in the Sweet Sixteen.

Medcalf also, of course, shone a bright light on Louisville's biggest addition, Flory Bidunga. The Kansas transfer ranked No. 1 overall in the Transfer Portal and is a unanimous 5-star transfer.

The Cards' offseason haul put them right back in the mix to be a Final Four contender, and a lot of media is high on Kelsey's additions. Louisville didn't meet its expectations this past season, and Kelsey made some big adjustments and built what may be his best roster yet.
