Louisville football has had a massive offseason so far as Jeff Brohm and Vince Marrow have exceeded everyone’s expectations. The Cardinals not only found a way to avoid disastrous situations and keep Isaac Brown, AJ Green, and Antonio Watts, but also landed elite portal players like Brody Foley, Koen Entringer, Lincoln Kienholz, and Tre Richardson.

Louisville has landed 30 commitments so far via the Transfer Portal, and its offseason ranks as high as No. 4 in the nation by On3 Sports. The Cardinals are in multiple way-too-early top-25 rankings, and a large reason is who they were able to keep and bring in this offseason.

However, Brohm couldn’t keep everybody as Louisville lost 29 players to the portal, and one of the top former Cardinals ranked in the portal is Shaun Boykins Jr. The former Louisville running back initially committed to Montana, but he recently announced he will flip his commitment and head to Delaware State.

Boykins ranks as the No. 5 highest-ranked former Louisville Cardinal in the Transfer Portal, according to 247 Sports, as he ranks No 598 overall and No. 52 among running backs. Boykins first announced he will enter the portal on December 24 on his social media, and then made it official on January 2 when the portal window officially opened.

The 6-foot-1, 195-pound running back initially committed to Montana on January 12, but after being committed to the Grizzlies for just five days, Boykins decided to flip his commitment to Delaware State. The Hornets are coached by former Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson, who was hired in 2024 and led Delaware State to an 8-4 record in his first season.

Boykins looks to be a key addition for Jackson’s Hornets as he committed to Louisville part of the 2024 recruiting class as a wide receiver before the Cards moved him to running back this past offseason. Boykins was a 3-star recruit out of high school and ranked as high as No. 1,002 overall and No. 133 among wide receivers.

The former Cardinal was with Louisville for two seasons, but saw his most action in 2025, when he carried 37 times for 190 yards and one touchdown. His best game came against Kentucky when he had a big part of Louisville’s dominant 41-0 win over Kentucky after he earned 22 rushes for 101 yards and one touchdown against the Wildcats.
