Week 6 is suddenly one of the most important games on Louisville’s schedule. In the wide-open ACC, Virginia has quickly become a top contender after knocking off Florida State in Charlottesville on Friday and cracking the AP Top 25 at No. 24. So, Jeff Brohm will need his team, and its biggest offensive playmaker, healthy to take down the Cavaliers at home.

Sophomore running back Isaac Brown has yet to miss a game this season and leads the Cardinals with 268 rushing yards on 33 carries, but has been limited for most of the year. Last week against Pitt, Brown carried the ball 14 times, but managed just 20 yards, while backup Duke Watson, after injuring his ankle, shouldered much of the load in the backfield to close out the victory.

Watson finished the game with 47 yards on his 14 carries as Louisville finished averaging 1.6 yards per rush. Moss had the team’s only rushing touchdown on a quarterback sneak and threw for 339 yards and three more scores.

On Thursday, Louisville released its final injury report of the week, which had both Brown and Watson listed as probable to play against the Cavaliers. If they’re back to full strength, it could help Brohm jumpstart a struggling run game and help senior quarterback Miller Moss, who has thrown three interceptions across his first four starts with the program.

Last season, as a true freshman, Brown led the way for the Cardinals on the ground, rushing for 1,173 yards on 165 carries. He was expected to be one of the ACC’s biggest stars as a sophomore, but injuries have limited his effectiveness. Two weeks ago, against Bowling Green, Brown carried the ball just one time for 18 yards.

While Virginia is ranked, Louisville is still favored by 6.5 points at home, so a victory would hardly be an upset. Still, there is not enough of a discrepancy between these two teams for Brohm to limit the workload of his top running backs before a bye week.

Louisville has its second bye of the year in Week 7 before playing the ACC favorite, Miami, in Week 8.

Latest Isaac Brown injury update:

Brown was listed as probable on Louisville’s midweek injury report and is expected to play in Week 7 against Miami. Duke Watson is also probable for the game.
