Louisville football hosted its second scrimmage of fall camp on Friday, and the Cardinals fans got some good news surrounding their defense. After the first scrimmage, head coach Jeff Brohm made it clear he was not pleased with the defense's performance.

“I was not real happy with the defense, so it is good that they struggled,” stated Brohm after the first scrimmage. “They gave up way too many big plays. They had a couple of busts that really cost us. So, that needs to be fixed, but that is really fixable.”

However, the defense listened to their head coach, stepped it up, and Brohm was very pleased with the defense's performance in the second scrimmage.

Louisville football defense responds with dominant second scrimmage

This defense has the talent and the experience to be extremely special this upcoming season, and Brohm made it clear in the second scrimmage that the defense stepped up and “dominated.”

“For the most part, it was a tale of two scrimmages,” stated Brohm after the second scrimmage. “So, the defense dominated today. Came out ready to go. Very sound in what we did. Eliminated big plays, making the offense drive down the field. And then we got some turnovers that would have been critical for our team to win.”

So, some good news surrounding this Louisville defense. The Cardinals' defense has high expectations and high potential this upcoming season, as they added key pieces like Tyler Thompson up front and, in the secondary, Tennessee transfer Kaleb Beasley, Ole Miss transfer TJ Banks, Kentucky transfer DJ Waller, and Iowa transfer Koen Entringer. But they also have key returners who are expected to be stars on this defense. Louisville returns team sack leader and preseason All-American Clev Lubin, along with AJ Green up front, and in the middle, they have Stanquan Clark, Antonio Watts, Kalib Perry, and TJ Capers.

ESPN’s Greg McElroy even reported on his podcast that many believe the defense can be the strength of this Louisville squad, and the second scrimmage proved why. This defense has the experience, physicality, and tools to be a legitimate defense in college football.

Louisville has a huge Week 1 showdown against one of the nation's top offenses and the No. 9 overall team, Ole Miss. So, this defense has to build momentum from this dominant performance and carry it into Tennessee on September 6. For Louisville to pull off that major upset, the defense is going to have to step up as it did against Miami and force turnovers on Trinidad Chambliss.

This performance from the defense is exactly what Brohm and Louisville fans wanted to see as the Cardinals head into the final stretch of fall camp. We are just two weeks away from Louisville vs. Ole Miss, and the Cards are looking to shock the nation.
