The countdown to Louisville football’s first game is officially on, as the Cardinals have just 50 days until their massive Week 1 showdown with Ole Miss. Louisville and Ole Miss are set for a thriller of a Week 1 matchup, to be played in Nashville, Tenn., on Sept. 6.

Earlier this week, Louisville and Jeff Brohm were at the ACC Media Day in Charlotte, and the Cardinals' head coach was asked about this matchup. Usually, Week 1 is an easy game for Power Four programs, as teams tend to ease into the season and play FCS opponents, but Brohm made it clear that Louisville isn’t afraid of anyone.

Brohm was asked about this matchup, and the Cardinals' head coach set the stage and the message for this huge showdown.

Louisville football has a huge opportunity in Week 1 against Ole Miss

This Week 1 showdown is likely going to be a top 25 showdown, as Ole Miss is trending as a likely top 15 team in the nation, while Louisville football is trending as a top 25 team in way-too-early rankings.

Since Brohm has arrived at Louisville, the Cardinals haven’t had a Week 1 showdown to this magnitude. Louisville played Georgia Tech in Week 1 in 2023, in 2024, they played Austin Peay, and this past season, they played Eastern Kentucky.

So, playing Ole Miss after their historic semifinal College Football Playoff run is a massive upgrade for the Cardinals and is a huge opportunity, and Brohm understands that.

“I think it is just a great challenge. What goes into it is that we have to prepare. You have to get ready to go, and you have to step up game one, and there can’t be any easing into the season. You have to bring your best,” stated Brohm. “Our team knows, right off the bat, we have to play great football.”

Ole Miss is coming off a historic year in which they reached their first College Football Playoff and earned the most wins in program history. The Rebels went on to win 13 games this past season and went to the CFP semifinals behind their star quarterback, Trinidad Chambliss.

Chambliss is expected to be one of the top quarterbacks in the country coming off a dominant year where he threw for nearly 4,000 passing yards, 22 touchdowns, and just three interceptions. Now, Louisville gets the first chance this upcoming year to hand them a loss, and Brohm's message should have the Cardinals fans excited for Sept. 6.

The stage is set for Louisville and Ole Miss, and Brohm just revealed his message in this huge opportunity. The Cardinals can’t lay an egg in Week 1, and they have to show up prepared and ready right off the bat. ESPN ranks Ole Miss as high as No. 8 in their summer rankings, so if Louisville wants to make a run at the CFP, this game gives them a massive chance to really set the tone of the year and to send a loud message to the rest of the nation.
