Pat Kelsey and Louisville basketball had one of the best offseasons in college basketball. The Cardinals added elite players from the Transfer Portal and the 2026 recruiting class, landing the fifth-ranked overall class by 247Sports.
Louisville completely rebuilt its roster, having to replace nine of its top 10 players from this past season, including all five starters. Kelsey went out and landed six players from the Transfer Portal and three players from the 2026 cycle, creating what many believe is a Final Four contender.
Well, Jeff Goodman appears to maybe not be all in on the Cardinals hype train. The college basketball insider pours cold water on Louisville basketball fans' Final Four dreams as he just gave the Cardinals extra fuel and motivation for the upcoming season.
Jeff Goodman gives Louisville basketball extra motivation with Final Four take
Right now, Louisville is earning a lot of hype and buzz with the roster Kelsey built. Louisville added the No. 1 overall transfer, a 5-star recruit from the 2026 cycle, and key role pieces from the portal and out of high school. The Cardinals' roster looks loaded on paper, but Goodman appears not to be all in.
“The expectations are Final Four with Louisville, and I’m not sure they’re a Final Four team," stated Goodman.
Louisville spent BIG this offseason, but will the Cardinals live up to the hype? 🤔

Louisville currently has the sixth-highest odds to win the 2026 National Championship, according to FanDuel, so Goodman is correct that the expectations are a Final Four. Louisville fans are starving for a Final Four run, as it has been since 2013, since the Cardinals cut down the nets and punched their ticket to the Final Four.
And while Louisville fans and a lot of national media believe this could be the year it happens, Goodman appears to think otherwise. The college basketball insider has doubts about whether Jackson Shelstad can be the facilitator Louisville needs him to be and questions Flory Bidunga's offensive game, saying he can’t do much other than score on lobs.
Goodman also stated that while Louisville landed the No. 1 overall transfer (Bidunga) in this portal, this transfer class wasn’t anything special.
“This transfer class wasn’t anything incredible,” Goodman stated.
Louisville had the Final Four dreams and expectations this past season, and they didn’t live up to it. And many will have concerns about Kelsey losing a pair of assistant coaches and having to make changes to his staff.
However, Goodman is just giving the Cardinals some fuel right now, and not that Louisville listens to the national media and needs any extra motivation, but this is perfect bulletin board material for Kelsey, Bidunga, Shelstad, and the entire Louisville organization.
