Louisville football is taking on Ole Miss in a massive Week 1 showdown inside Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tenn. The kickoff date was officially announced yesterday afternoon, with the Cardinals and Rebels scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.

The Cards and the Rebels both have high expectations, as Louisville is ranked as high as No. 14 in ESPN’s way-too-early rankings, and the Rebels are ranked No. 9. Jeff Brohm and the Cardinals have a massive opportunity to earn a huge Week 1 win over Ole Miss after the Rebels made program history and winning 13 games last season and making it to the CFP semifinals.

Entering 2026, Ole Miss is expected to be one of the best teams as the Mississippi state court judge granted the Rebels quarterback, Trinidad Chambliss, a sixth season of eligibility. However, it was just announced yesterday that the NCAA is appealing the injunction and is “asking the court to overrule the injunction and expedite the ruling.”

Latest Trinidad Chambliss update could lead to major change for Louisville football

The Ole Miss quarterback and the NCAA have been going back and forth since the end of the season on whether he will be eligible, but after he won the court case on Feb. 13, many thought this was over. Well, on Thursday afternoon, the NCAA reportedly filed a 658-page appeal on the ruling of Chambliss's sixth season of eligibility.

This obviously impacts Louisville, as if the state decides to take back its initial ruling and decides he isn’t eligible for a sixth season, then Brohm and company will have a much easier Week 1 game. If Chambliss can’t play in 2026, then the Cardinals would face a much less experienced quarterback, and they wouldn’t face a top-five quarterback heading into 2026.

Louisville’s chances of winning would soar, as Chambliss is coming off a season where he led Ole Miss to the program's first 11-win season, first College Football Playoffs, and first semifinals in the CFP after beating Georgia in the quarterfinals. The star quarterback was just ranked the No. 3 best quarterback before spring football by ESPN after he threw for 3,937 yards and 22 touchdowns last season, but was also a dual threat, rushing for 527 yards and eight touchdowns.

If Chambliss is ruled ineligible, then the Cards fans will have a lot more confidence in this showdown, and Louisville could see its College Football Playoffs odds soar if they earn this marquee win in Week 1. Louisville fans will keep an eye on this appeal, as it will have a huge impact on that Week 1 showdown, which many anticipate will be a top-25 matchup.
