Louisville basketball is set to make its postseason debut tomorrow afternoon against the winner of Syracuse vs SMU. The Cardinals have earned wins against both teams, but also suffered a loss to the Mustangs on February 17.
5 biggest observations from Louisville basketball’s ACC Tournament path
The Cardinals are a lock for the 2026 NCAA Tournament, but as far as their seed? Well, that is still up in the air. Louisville currently sits 22-9 on the season and finished 11-7 in conference play. The Cards had high expectations entering the season, and while they didn’t reach those expectations in the regular season, they still have a chance to make a huge statement in the ACC Tournament.
Pat Kelsey and his Cardinals have faced tons of adversity this season, whether that was Mikel Brown Jr. and his injury, outside noise, or whatever it may be, but Louisville is entering the ACC Tournament after earning its first Quad 1A win of the season, and it feels like this team might be peaking at the right time.
ACC Tournament could decide Louisville basketball’s NCAA Tournament seed
Louisville is a shoo-in to make the 2026 NCAA Tournament, but right now, with the Cardinals sitting No. 13 in NET rankings and No. 23 in the AP Polls, many analysts have Louisville around a No. 6 seed in March Madness. However, there is no lock whatsoever. If the Cards can go on a run and return to the ACC Championship game, they can certainly climb the seedings. But if they are one-and-done, there might be room for them to fall as well.
The ACC Tournament has huge implications for the Cardinals' NCAA Tournament seed. If SMU beats Syracuse and Virginia makes it to the semifinals, then Louisville has a chance to beat three teams in the top 40 of the NET rankings, with the Mustangs ranked No. 39, Miami ranked No. 32, and Virginia ranked No. 14. If Louisville can go on a huge run and beat these three teams in three straight days, and matchup with Duke in the ACC Championship game, the Cardinals would have a strong case to climb up from a No. 6 seed to a No. 5 seed and if they shock everyone and beat Duke, they would certainly have a case for a No. 4 seed.
Right now, Bracket Matrix has Louisville’s average seed at 5.91 entering the ACC Tournament, with their highest seed a 5 and their lowest a 7. And that takes us to Louisville’s floor for the NCAA Tournament seed. If the Cardinals go one-and-done and lose to SMU or Syracuse, they could possibly fall to a 7-seed, as their 1-8 record in Quad 1A games is similar to last year, when they were given an 8-seed.
So, with the ACC Tournament starting shortly, the Cardinals' ceiling for their seed feels like a 4-seed if they win it all or a 5-seed if they return to the championship game. If Louisville makes it to the semifinals, they will likely have a case to be a 6-seed, but if they lose to Miami in the quarterfinals, or SMU or Syracuse in the first round, Louisville fans can expect the Cardinals to be a 6-seed at best or maybe fall to a 7-seed in the worst-case scenario.
