Kelsey is once again getting a lot of buzz this offseason, but ESPN is telling Louisville they have to prove themselves, as the Duke Blue Devils are expected to be the clear ACC favorite for the thir.
Louisville basketball gets clarity on what the gap between Cardinals and Duke is now
The Cardinals' roster is beginning to fill up as Kelsey has landed three former 5-star recruits in the portal in Bidunga, Jackson Shelstad, and Karter Knox, as well as a 4-star transfer in Alvaro Folgueiras. Kelsey has many fans believing this group can contend for the ACC Title and snap their Sweet Sixteen drought, but ESPN isn’t all in just yet.
In ESPN’s latest way-too-early Top 25 for men's college basketball, the Cardinals come in ranked No. 15. Many media outlets have Louisville ranked inside their top 15, as Field of 68 has them at No. 13, but with the Cardinals at No. 15, it is telling the fans they have the potential to make a run in March, behind the roster Kelsey is building but the Duke Blue Devils are going to be tough to overcome.
"The Cardinals have generated plenty of buzz with their portal class, particularly given that they landed two of the more sought-after players on the board a few days after the season ended in Kansas transfer Flory Bidunga and Oregon transfer Jackson Shelstad. Pat Kelsey has since built around that duo by adding powerful two-way wing Karter Knox from Arkansas, skilled forward Alvaro Folgueiras from Iowa and productive guard De'Shayne Montgomery from Dayton. Adrian Wooley also returns from this past season. It's a key season for Kelsey, and he's building a roster with that in mind."Jeff Borzello
Duke is ranked No. 2 in the nation in the ESPN rankings, as Jon Scheyer is building one of the deepest rosters in college basketball. Duke landed John Blackwell over Louisville in the portal and, on top of the 5-star transfer, they returned four key players in Patrick Ngongba II, Dame Sarr, Caleb Foster, and Cayden Boozer. Also, Duke landed three players in the top 15 of the 2026 recruiting class in 5-star Cameron Williams, Deron Rippey Jr., and Bryson Howard.
Duke is looking to win their third straight ACC Title, but Kelsey has this program generating a lot of buzz from the Transfer Portal. The 'Cardinals' offseason isn’t done yet, as they still need to add a few key bench pieces if they want to try to snap Duke's ACC Title streak.
Kelsey and the Cardinals are trending in the right direction with this dominant portal class, and they have what it takes to compete with Duke. However, Duke won’t be easy to get through and will be a powerhouse once again.
