Louisville basketball recently learned that its 2027 commitment, Isaac Ellis, will reclass and will now be part of the 2026 recruiting class. This means Ellis will join Louisville this offseason and be part of the 2026-27 roster, adding depth to the 'Cardinals' backcourt.

Ellis is now part of a backcourt that will be led by former 5-star recruit and 4-star transfer Jackson Shelstad and key returning shooting guard Adrian Wooley, along with 4-star transfer from Dayton, De'Shayne Montgomery, and redshirt guard London Johnson.

Ellis brings elite scoring and playmaking, averaging over 31 points per game this past season and winning the OTE MVP award. With Ellis joining Louisville’s 2026 class, the Cardinals now need a wing, and when looking at the Cards' target, one 4-star recruit stands out.

Louisville basketball has a clear top target in the 2026 cycle

It becomes quite clear that Louisville and Pat Kelsey’s No. 1 target now, after the Ellis update, is 4-star 2026 recruit Boyuan Zhang. The Cards need a scorer off the bench who can add depth at the wing position, as right now the only true small forward Kelsey has is Arkansas transfer, Karter Knox.

So, with Louisville in need of some depth at the small forward position, Zhang emerges as Kelsey’s No. 1 target. The 2026 4-star is taking an official visit to Louisville this weekend, May 8, as Kelsey will try to earn a commitment from the third 2026 recruit.

Zhang is a rising star in the 2026 cycle, as he transferred to Veritas Academy and immediatley took over. This past season, he averaged the second-highest points per game in the Nike EYBL Scholastic League at 20.2. He also added 5.7 rebounds per game.

Now, Louisville is in a heated recruiting battle with Cal, Oregon, Minnesota, and Illinois, as the other four programs have also earned official visits. As of May 9, Cal is the slight favorite, with On3 Sports giving them a 25.2 percent chance of earning Zhang’s commitment. Then it is followed by Illinois, Minnesota, Louisville (5.7 percent chance), and Oregon.

The 4-star wing ranks No. 57 overall in the 2026 recruiting class and No. 20 among small forwards. He soared in the rankings after he dominated in the FIBA U19 World Cup last summer for China, where he averaged 14.7 points and 5.1 rebounds a game.
