Louisville basketball just learned more about its upcoming season as the Cardinals add a powerhouse team to their 2026-27 schedule. Louisville is expected to be one of the top teams in the nation, as the Cardinals currently have the No. 9 odds to win the 2027 National Title, and now they will get a massive test.
The Cardinals are adding the reigning national champions, the Michigan Wolverines, according to Jeff Goodman and the Field of 68. Goodman reports Louisville and Michigan are finalizing a two-year neutral-site series, including this upcoming season, when these two elite programs will go head-to-head at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit on Dec. 5.

For Michigan, this appears to replace the Duke game that had been planned on Amazon.
Louisville basketball and Michigan finalizing marquee neutral-site series
The Cardinals and the Wolverines will be one of the top non-conference matches of the 2026-27 season. Louisville is coming off an NCAA Tournament run in which they reached the second round for the first time since 2017, while Michigan is the reigning national champions after going 37-3 and defeating UConn 69-63.
The Wolverines were, of course, led by their head coach Dusty May, who is now no longer their head coach after he made the jump to the NBA this offseason and is now the head coach of the Dallas Mavericks. Mike Boynton Jr will now lead Michigan, who was initially their interim, but recently inked a two-year deal earlier this summer.
The Wolverines and the Cardinals each have incredibly high expectations for this upcoming season, as Michigan has the fifth-highest odds to win it all this upcoming season with +1500 odds, while Louisville isn’t far behind with the ninth-highest odds at +2500. The Wolverines' roster is looking to go back-to-back, with guard Elliot Cadeau leading them, 5-star 2026 recruit Brandon McCoy Jr., and three 4-star transfers: J.P. Estrella, Moustapha Thiam, and Jalen Reed.
Michigan’s 2026 recruiting class ranks as high as No. 3 overall in the nation after landing six commitments, including four 4-stars and one 5-star. Three commitments rank inside the top 50 in the 2026 cycle, including McCoy, who ranks as high as No. 10 in the nation and No. 2 among shooting guards.
As for Louisville, they added six players from the Transfer Portal, including two who ranked in the top 20, three in the top 60, and four in the top 70. Louisville earned the No. 1 Transfer Portal class in the nation, led by the No. 1 overall transfer, Flory Bidunga. The Cards also have the No. 18-ranked recruiting class in the 2026 cycle, after landing 5-star Obinna Ekezie Jr. and 4-star Boyuan Zhang.
With Louisville adding Michigan to this upcoming schedule, the Cardinals now have 10 of their 13 non-conference games. Right now, Louisville fans know the Cardinals will face Chattanooga, Morehead State, Texas, Kentucky, Memphis, Baylor, and will compete in the Player's Era Men's Championship, where they face Texas Tech to start.
