Louisville basketball is trending in the right direction with a few players, but one player who stands out at the moment is San Diego State transfer Miles Byrd. The Cardinals reportedly get a massive update from the 4-star transfer as Jeff Goodman of the Field of 68 reports that Louisville is in a heated recruiting battle for the elite shooting guard.

Louisville basketball in heated battle for elite 4-star transfer Miles Byrd
Byrd emerges as one of the Cardinals' top targets in the Transfer Portal, as the San Diego State transfer is one of the top two-way players in college basketball. This past season, Byrd went on to win the Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year award after averaging 1.9 steals and 1.2 blocks per game.
The elite defender logged at least two steals and two blocks in six games, and secured three steals or more in 11 games. The 6-foot-7, 190-pound guard is exactly what Louisville fans want this offseason, as they want someone who can guard and impact the game on the defensive end similarly to what Chucky Hepburn did a couple of seasons ago.
Byrd is an elite defender and a defensive menace, but also is an athletic wing who can play shooting guard or small forward. He slashes to the rim and can soar through the air, averaging 10.4 points while shooting 40.5 percent from the field, and added 4.7 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game.
In the 2024-25 season, the 4-star transfer averaged 12.1 points, 2.1 steals, and 1.1 blocks per game while shooting 38.1 percent from the field. He has consistently been this elite two-way guard throughout his career, and right now, it appears Louisville is trending for the 4-star transfer.
If the Cardinals could land Byrd before tomorrow’s massive day, where they have the No. 1 transfer Flory Bidunga and the No. 8 transfer Jackson Shelstad on campus, then it could be a huge first domino to fall their way and could help Kelsey try to land the two visitors tomorrow.
Byrd ranks as high as No. 7 overall in the Transfer Portal and No. 1 among small forwards and No. 4 among shooting guards.
