Louisville basketball receives major disrespect in early NCAA Tournament projection

Louisville basketball is trending as a top-15 team in the majority of reporters' and media outlets' way-too-early rankings. The Cardinals are coming off an eye-popping offseason where Pat Kelsey landed the nation's No. 1 overall Transfer Portal class.

Joe Lunardi's latest bracketology sent a loud message in the Louisville-Kentucky debate

Kelsey secured six commitments from the Transfer Portal, including the No. 1 overall transfer, and three commitments from the 2026 recruiting class, including 5-star Obinna Ekezie Jr. The Cardinals have a lot of buzz this offseason, but in a recent way-too-early bracketology, they didn't get the seed many fans think they deserve.

CBS Sports released a 2027 NCAA Tournament Bracketology, and the Cardinals fans can't stop laughing at the disrespect.

Louisville basketball earns head-scratching projection

Louisville is trending as one of the top teams in college basketball heading into the 2026-27 season, yet CBS Sports just projected the Cards to be a No. 5 seed in the Big Dance.

While it is only June and Bracketology doesn't mean much, the Cardinals earning a 5-seed is laughable to Louisville fans. The Cards are ranked as high as No. 5 in Fox Sports' way-too-early rankings and have the sixth-best odds to win the National Title, according to FanDuel, but CBS Sports predicts them to be a 5-seed.

As of right now Louisville has +2200 odds to win the National Title, only putting them behind Florida, Duke, Michigan, UConn, Illinois, and Houston.

ESPN's Joe Lunardi recently put out his own Bracketology, and the Cardinals earn the praise and respect from Lunardi, as Louisville earned a 2-seed. With the Cardinals ranking in many way-too-early rankings top 10, it makes more sense for Louisville to be around that 2-seed or 3-seed mark, but CBS Sports putting Louisville at a 5-seed feels incredibly disrespectful.

Louisville had one of the best offseasons in college basketball, adding nine players in two months. The Cardinals landed two 5-star centers in Bidunga and Ekezie, while also adding multiple 4-star transfers in Karter Knox, Jackson Shelstad, Alvaro Folgueiras and De'Shayne Montgomery.

On top of those 4-star transfer additions, Kelsey also added two other commitments from the 2026 recruiting class, including 4-star small forward Boyuan Zhang.

This Louisville squad is loaded with talent, athleticism, and depth. Kelsey made huge adjustments this offseason, attacking his frontcourt, while also bringing in 5-star talent, including multiple former 5-stars out of high school in Shelstad and Knox.

The Cardinals know they will have to prove themselves after not living up to expectations this past season, but being projected as a 5-seed is early motivation for Kelsey's squad. Louisville has a nice blend of experience and youth, and Cardinals fans believe this squad could end Louisville's drought without reaching the Final Four.
