Louisville basketball has had an impressive offseason, as Pat Kelsey completely rebuilt this Cardinals roster. The Cardinals added nine players this offseason, including six from the Transfer Portal and three from the 2026 recruiting class, and Kelsey has Louisville ranked No. 1 in the nation for its portal class and No. 5 overall for its additions, according to 247Sports.

Louisville basketball's X-factor will help Cardinals fans move on from Milan Momcilovic

The Cards are trending in the right direction as they appear to be ranked inside everyone’s way-too-early rankings. Louisville fans were hoping to land Milan Momcilovic because many thought the Cards needed a legitimate 3-point specialist, and while that would have been a massive splash for many reasons, the Cards might have already added their 3-point specialist.

Louisville added three players from its 2026 recruiting class, and while 5-star recruit and the No. 1 center in the 2026 cycle, Obinna Ekezie Jr., gets all the attention, Boyuan Zhang is another huge get for Kelsey. The Cardinals need some 3-point shooters on this roster to space the floor, and while Momcilovic would have been a huge addition, Zhang just went viral for catching fire at practice from beyond the arc.

The 4-star commit splashed 14 3’s in a row in a recent video, including 10 straight from the corner, and Louisville fans are immediatley raising eyebrows.

With Louisville needing some threats from beyond the arc, it appears Zhang is emerging as someone who can come off the bench and be that 3-point sharpshooter. On3 Sports' Jamie Shaw loves Zhang and his ability to recruit, as after Louisville landed him, Shaw reported that Zhang has a quick release, can shoot from deep range, and called him a “sniper.”

“Boyuan Zhang, what he is, he’s a scorer. At his best, he’s a sniper,” “He’s lefty, 6-foot-6, 6-foot-7 range, really understands how to get to his space, and plays with great balance. Quick release, deep range, and he’s super confident, as I said, playing on the EYBL circuit, think they played 14 or 15 games this season; 20 points per game. So, he is able to score outside of just shooting 3’s as well.”

Zhang averaged the second most points in Nike EYBL Scholastic League with an eye-popping 20.2 points per game. Shaw makes it clear the 4-star freshman is an elite 3-point shooter, as he reported Zhang can shoot it from “30 feet with relatively consistency as well.”

So many fans have had concerns about Louisville’s 3-point shooting with this roster, but this recent video of Zhang is a huge boost of confidence, as the 4-star commit could get early-rotation minutes and be Kelsey’s sharpshooter.

The 4-star small forward is 6-foot-8, 205 pounds and ranks as high as No. 49 overall in the 2026 recruiting class and No. 18 among small forwards. Zhang is quickly making a name for himself this summer, and is looking like he could be the exact player Louisville needs off the bench.
