Louisville basketball continues to recruit hard this September as the Cardinals are preparing to host multiple elite prospects. Pat Kelsey and the Cardinals are trending for many 2026 and 2027 prospects, but Recruits News reported that the Cardinals will now look even further into the future and get a head start on the 2028 recruiting class.

The Cardinals will host 5-star recruit and No. 5 prospect in the 2028 class, Kameron Mercer, this weekend for an unofficial visit. The 5-star recruit reposted the tweet, confirming that he will be on campus this weekend.

Louisville is just one of the few teams to extend an offer to Mercer, but with the Cardinals hosting the sophomore for a visit, it is clear Kelsey is not messing around and wants to get a jump on these superstar recruits.

Louisville basketball making moves early for 5-star wing

The 6-foot-5, 190-pound wing is ranked as both a shooting guard and a small forward. ESPN has the 5-star recruit as high as No. 5 in the 2028 cycle and the No. 3-ranked small forward.

The 5-star recruit represented Team USA on the U16 team, where Mercer went on to win gold at the 2025 FIBA U16 Men's AmeriCup in Juarez, Mexico. The forward played a key role off the bench for Team USA as he averaged 5.8 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 2.2 steals in six games.

Louisville extended its offer to Mercer back in July after the 5-star stood out to the Cardinals during his time with Huntington Prep. The 5-star averaged 11 points, six rebounds, and five assists during his time with Hunington Prep, but he now will play for Overtime Elite during his sophomore season.

With it still so early in the Mercer recruiting process, it is hard to say who a frontrunner is, but Louisville putting in the work this early and earning an unofficial visit is a good sign that the Cardinals are trending in the right direction.
