Louisville basketball is one of the main conversations in college basketball right now, as Pat Kelsey has the Cardinals trending toward a potential top-10 team in the nation. The Cards had to completely rebuild this roster, and Kelsey exceeded all expectations after dominating the Transfer Portal and landing three 2026 recruits.

Similarly, Kentucky had a major offseason, most recently when Mark Pope and the Wildcats landed 5-star transfer Milan Momcilovic over Louisville. So, with Kentucky and Louisville ranking No. 1 and No. 2 in portal rankings, and Momcilovic recently committing to the Wildcats, The Field of 68 recently compared the two rosters and broke down who is better in their opinion.

And when looking at the two rosters, Jeff Goodman made it clear who he thinks is better, and the Cardinals fans are going to love it.

Jeff Goodman settles Louisville-Kentucky offseason debate with one clear choice

Right now, Louisville and Kentucky fans are going back and forth about who is better and who will have a better season. The two in-state rivals are trending toward likely preseason top-20 teams, as both programs had successful offseasons.

However, when looking at each roster, Goodman made it clear who he believes is better.

“I am going to go Louisville,” Goodman stated on a recent Field of 68 podcast. “Really going through it I feel a little more confident with Louisville right now and their roster.”

Louisville has the No. 1 overall portal class, the No. 19 2026 recruiting class, and a composite ranking of No. 5 in the nation. While Kentucky is behind Louisville at No. 2 in its Transfer Portal class, ranked No. 101 overall for the 2026 recruiting class, and No. 58 overall.

Right now, Louisville is trending as a likely top-15 team in the preseason rankings, with the Cardinals ranked anywhere from No. 8 to No. 14, while Kentucky appears to be ranked around No. 17-20.

So, it is a close race when looking at the rosters on paper, but Goodman and many other college basketball insiders are leaning towards Louisville. Now, this will, of course, all play out on the court on December 12, but for right now, these two fanbases are going back and forth over who they think is better, and Goodman leaning toward Louisville was a big boost for the Cardinals.

Louisville defeated Kentucky last year, snapping its three-game losing streak to the Wildcats, and now the Cardinals will try to earn two straight wins over the Cats for the first time since the 2007-08 and the 2008-09 seasons. December 12 is a date circled on every Cardinal and Wildcat fan calendar, and right now, Louisville fans are feeling good about the roster Kelsey put together.
