Louisville football had a very busy offseason, as the Cardinals had to replace nearly its entire offense except for its two star running backs. The Cardinals landed a top-five Transfer Portal class in the nation, largely because of what Brohm brought in on offense.
A big question from the national media about this offense was the Cardinals wide receiver room. Louisville lost its top three receivers and five of its top six, including Chris Bell and Caullin Lacy, who went to the NFL. Bell and Lacy each had over 635 receiving yards this past season, and Bell finished with an impressive 917 yards and six touchdowns.
So, it wasn’t going to be easy to replace these two stars on the outside, but for anyone who had questions about the Cardinals' wide receiver room, they have certainly answered them in the first two games.
Lawayne McCoy and Tre Richardson are heating up for Louisville
Louisville brought in two 4-star transfers, Tre Richardson and Lawayne McCoy, and after two games, they have not disappointed.
Richardson transferred to Louisville as the No. 66 overall transfer in the portal after a dominant year with Vanderbilt. The 4-star transfer made an immediate impact with Louisville in Week 1, having four catches for 83 yards and a 62-yard touchdown, along with one carry for 30 yards and a touchdown. He quickly showed off his speed to get open in the secondary and immediately emerged as an elite target for Lincoln Kienholz.
Richardson wasn’t the only receiver to step up in Week 1, as McCoy had a ridiculous 54-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter against Ole Miss to cut the Cards' deficit to just seven.
Then this past weekend against Villanova, the two balled out yet again, as Richardson led the team in receptions with seven catches while McCoy led the Cardinals in receiving yards with 102. McCoy once again had a long touchdown in Week 2, as the Florida State transfer had a 61-yard touchdown that put Louisville up 24-10.
As for Richardson, he finished the game with seven catches for 98 yards, with his longest catch going for 24 yards.
Entering the year, many thought the running back room would be the Cardinals' glaring strength, however, Kienholz, McCoy, and Richardson are quickly turning this passing game into an elite offense, averaging 48.5 points per game and 552 total yards per game.
Richardson and McCoy are meeting expectations early, but Louisville has another major game this weekend against SMU. The Cardinals are going to need these two to stay red-hot and find a way to break open and help lead the Cardinals to their first win over SMU.
