The 2026 NBA Draft officially came to an end, and Louisville basketball’s Mikel Brown Jr. was one of the top picks in this year's draft. The Cardinals haven't had a first-round pick in the draft since Donovan Mitchell in 2017, and to expand on that, the Cards haven’t had a top-10 pick since 1996.

Brown snapped both of those draft droughts after he was selected No. 6 overall by the Brooklyn Nets, making him the first Cardinal picked in the top six since 1990. Brown being selected at No. 6 wasn’t a huge surprise, as he was slowly rising in NBA mock drafts leading up to draft day.

However, some Nets fans apparently might not be happy with the selection. One of New York's sports reporters, Adam Schein, talked about the Nets' selection, and his words should be Brown’s fuel entering the season, and he looks to prove him completely wrong.

Mikel Brown Jr. just got the motivation he didn't know he needed

Entering draft day, everyone knew the top four picks. No one knew the exact order, but everyone knew BYU’s AJ Dybantsa, Kansas’ Darryn Peterson, Duke’s Cameron Boozer, and North Carolina’s Caleb Wilson were going to be the first four selected.

After that, it was between four point guards, including Brown. Well, Keaton Wagler ended up being the first of the four point guards selected, followed by Brown. And Schein had some strong words about the pick, giving Brown the extra motivation he might need.

“The Brooklyn Nets should fold the franchise. Get out of the basketball business,” stated Schein. “Clearly, this organization has no idea what the hell they are doing. Get out of town. I don’t want to see the Brooklyn Nets in New York City ever again. They are an embarrassment to the NBA, to sports, and to the great state of New York.”

Schein never said anything super strong about Brown, but he did poke about his back injury. But the reporter being this upset about the Nets selecting Brown should light a fire under Brown and make him want to force Schein to admit he was wrong.

A lot of fans are high on the Arkansas star, and Schein apparently believes he will be a “superstar”. Now, Brown clearly has that potential, whether Schein wants to say it or not. The Cardinal slid up in the draft for a reason, and a big reason is because of his ability to shoot from beyond the arc and his crazy explosiveness.

There was no clear pick at No. 6. A lot of mock drafts had either Brown or Acuff, but with the Nets going Brown, he will have that comparison for the majority of his career. The back injury is a concern, but over the next four years, if he is healthy, he has a chance to make Schein regret these words.
