The NCAA has officially expanded the NCAA Tournament, as there will now be 76 teams in the college basketball National Tournament. Louisville basketball has made the NCAA Tournament two straight years, and appears to be a lock for the next season, and so while the expansion doesn’t really impact them getting into the tournament, it more so takes the joy out of making the tournament.
3 biggest offseason Louisville basketball worries still nagging at Pat Kelsey
College basketball fans were, for the most part, against this expansion, but the NCAA decided to run with it anyway. Now, the majority of fans are voicing their frustration, including the idea that making the tournament isn't as big an accomplishment as it once was.

NCAA expands the Big Dance to 76 teams
Every year, college basketball fans gather around to watch the Selection Sunday show, sweating and anxiously awaiting to see if their team made the tournament. In 1985, the NCAA expanded it to 64 teams, and that was the magic number fans loved.
Then they expanded it to 68 in 2011, when the NCAA started its “First Four” play-in games. And now, the 2027 NCAA Tournament will have a whopping 76 teams, making many fans believe it takes the pure joy out of making the tournament.
Louisville was a lock to make it, but in 2025, when the Cardinals made it for the first time since 2019, Louisville fans were just happy to hear their name and be part of the Big Dance again. However, now that the league is expanding to 76 teams, it certainly feels like missing the tournament is more embarrassing than a real accomplishment.
For example, last year, Florida State, Auburn, and Oklahoma were some teams on the bubble, and when looking at their records and resumes, do these teams truly deserve to make the tournament? Expanding the tournament helps Louisville as it makes it much easier for Pat Kelsey to get Louisville to the tournament, but it takes the pride and the joy of hearing Louisville or the team you root for on Selection Sunday.
