Pat Kelsey and Louisville basketball get the two-way guard they needed and wanted. Just moments ago, it was reported that Louisville officially earned a commitment from the Dayton transfer and 4-star, De’Shayne Montgomery.

Louisville basketball fans call for reunion as former fan-favorite enters Transfer Portal

Montgomery marks the Cardinals' fifth commitment this offseason from the Transfer Portal, as Kelsey landed Flory Bidunga, Jackson Shelstad, Karter Knox, and Alvaro Folgueiras. Louisville’s portal class continues to put the Cardinals in the Final Four contender conversation, as the Dayton transfer will bring not just a big boost to the bench on offense, but he will be that big-time defensive guard for Louisville that Kelsey and the fans desperately wanted.

Louisville basketball lands 4-star transfer De’Shayne Montgomery

Last year, Louisville desperately missed a player like Chucky Hepburn, who wasn’t just reliable and efficient on offense, but was reliable and a pest on defense. This offseason, fans wanted to address not just Louisville’s frontcourt but also its defense, and Kelsey continues to turn heads nationwide with this portal class.

Montgomery is coming off his best season in his three years, as he averaged a career high 13.4 points and 2.1 steals per game. On top of that, he averaged 4.0 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game while shooting 49 percent from the field and 33.5 percent from 3-point range.

The 4-star transfer was an efficient scorer this past season, scoring 20 or more points in 7 games, including a 27-point game against East Tennessee State, tying his career high. He is more than just a scorer, though, as on the defensive side, he was a pest, earning three or more steals in 12 games, four or more in six games, six in one game, and seven in another.

His 77 steals this past season ranked No. 11 in Division 1 basketball, and his 2.1 steals per game ranked No. 22 in Division I basketball. The 4-star transfer averaged 1.1 steals per game with Georgia and 1.7 steals per game his freshman season at Mount St. Mary’s. In his three years, he has 141 steals.

The 6-foot-4, 190-pound shooting guard won the MAAC Rookie of the Year in the 2023-24 season after averaging 13.2 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 1.7 steals per game. The Cardinals needed a legit two-way player who can be a pest on defense and force turnovers, but also score the ball, and it seems like Kelsey just landed his guy.
