Louisville basketball recently received crushing news that they are no longer the frontrunner for 5-star point guard Taylen Kinney. The 5-star point guard is not only the nation's No. 1 point guard in the 2026 class, but he is a Newport, Kentucky native and Pat Kelsey's glaring No. 1 target in the guard position.

The Cardinals seeing Joe Tipton log Kansas as his prediction was crushing, but a little bit too soon, as Kelsey has some magic tricks up his sleeves. The Cardinals' head coach was recently interviewed on The Field of 68 podcast, and his viral and bold comment was a pivotal pitch to Kinney on why the Cardinals are clearly the best option for him.

Pat Kelsey’s bold PGU claim is a pivotal pitch to 5-star Taylen Kinney

The Cardinals' head coach went absolutely viral earlier this week from his interview with The Field of 68. Kelsey made a bold claim that outraged Duke and Kentucky fans, but in reality, there might have been a glorious silver lining when he claimed Louisville as PGU.

"Mikel picked Point Guard U," Kelsey stated on 5-star point guard Mikel Brown Jr. committing to Louisville in January 2025. "In my opinion, he picked Point Guard U. I think in the modern basketball era, Louisville is Point Guard U."

Many fans immediately became upset with Kelsey for claiming Louisville is PGU, and whether he is right or not, the deeper meaning behind the claim is a significant pitch to Kinney. Kelsey is making a last-second pitch to Kinney and is trying to tell the Kentucky native that Louisville is the best University for a point guard.

The Cardinals have had quite the guard collection in Peyton Siva, Donovan Mitchell, Edgar Sosa, Reece Gaines, and now Mikel Brown Jr., but Kelsey is sending a message to Kinney that if he wants to be an elite point guard, then Louisville is the place for him.

Kelsey is sending a pivotal message to Kinney that if he wants to be an elite point guard in college and in the NBA, then Louisville is the perfect place for him. Kinney's commitment date was announced as he will make his decision on September 28 on CBS at 1:15 p.m. local time.
